Destination Addiction
I was scrolling through Instagram and found a quote I loved, as it related to something I preach frequently. It went like this:
BEWARE OF DESTINATION ADDICTION: A PREOCCUPATION WITH THE IDEA THAT HAPPINESS IS IN THE NEXT PLACE, THE NEXT JOB, AND THE NEXT PARTNER. UNTIL YOU GIVE UP THE IDEA THAT HAPPINESS IS SOMEWHERE ELSE, IT WILL NEVER BE WHERE YOU ARE.
Although all is well in my world I have lately been so inspired and because of that have a very long list of things I would like to get done, create, share & achieve. I know Lewis often feels the same way and we get so focussed on the future that the present becomes merely part of the process, rather than an equally enjoyable and important part of our journey. I realised I was guilty of thinking what I like to call “I’ll be happy when…”. Maybe in my case not so much I’ll be happy when, but I’ll be even happier when…
The issue with this is that it interferes with your current state and stops you from living in the present and enjoying each moment for what it is. I have so much to be thankful for and happy about right now, that I have absolutely no reason to fall back into such an average way of thinking. Neither does anyone else! If you’re living a truly fulfilling and inspired life you will ALWAYS have something on the horizon that you can’t wait to share and give, but you cannot let that interfere with your gratitude and ability to live in the moment as well as looking forward.
I wanted to share this because it’s a reminder that no matter who we are, what our circumstances are and what we’re excited to achieve, share and create in the future…sometimes we all need to rein our thoughts in and remember to be at peace right now. There’s absolutely nothing stopping any of us. Gratitude in my opinion is one of the most important emotions we can feel as humans and the best part is that absolutely every single one of us can feel it right this second if we make the conscious decision to do so and nurture more empowering thought patterns.
If you can relate and find that you have a case of destination addiction yourself I have an immediate solution that will bring you back to an amazing state of gratitude. Watch Tony Robbins new documentary on Netflix “I am not your guru”. I watched it last night and in the first 5 minutes was in (positive) tears. I have no doubt that it could touch even the “self help skeptics” in some way. It immediately brought me back to a peak state of motivation and gratitude and in that mindset is where we’re the most productive and fulfilled.
Wishing you all an amazing week ahead full of progress and gratitude.
