Where’s Your Discipline?
Have you ever heard someone comment on a peer’s level of discipline?
- “He’s so disciplined.”
- “She really lacks discipline.”
These are what I call blanket statements.
They are vague, and fixed labels that are imposed on someone after a narrow set of performance is analyzed.
I’m going to suggest an alternative perspective on the discipline model…
What if we’re all highly disciplined?
And what if it was just the area of our discipline that varied?
This is what I believe.
From what I’ve seen speaking with thousands of students since 2011, we’re all disciplined in some area.
- Some of us are disciplined in our finances.
- Some of us are disciplined in our fitness and health.
- Some of us are disciplined in our cooking and home prep.
- Some of us are disciplined in our video games.
- Some of us are disciplined in our beauty routines.
- Some of us are disciplined in our trading routines.
The area of our discipline reflects the area of our highest values.
The area of our discipline often reflects the area of our highest results.
Understanding where your values, results, and disciplines are can unlock a powerful resource:
Discipline transfer.

- Question 1: What are your top 3 areas of discipline?
- Question 2: What are your bottom 3 areas of discipline?
- Rule 1: Never beat yourself up about your highest and lowest areas of discipline. Everyone has them.
- Question 3: How can I monetize my top 3 areas of discipline?
- Struggling? Ask yourself: How can I help others who wish they were disciplined in these areas? Could I coach them? Could I hold them accountable?
- Question 4: Who can help push me in my areas of lowest discipline?
- Question 5: How much is their time, mentorship and coaching worth? Can I buy it? Can I exchange training in my discipline for training in theirs?
Using your answers from Question 1, 2 and 5, orchestrate a way in which you can bridge your low discipline areas by offering services in your high discipline areas. This could be by monetizing your high discipline areas and paying for a coach. Or, this could be by swapping services between a counterparty with an opposing discipline set.
It sounds simple, but it’s incredibly powerful.
Enjoy.
